Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean Ride

The Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean ride (located in the New Orleans Square) is certainly one of our families favorites. It's one of the rides that the whole family can go on, including Lily "1", and with a ride time right near 15 minutes it's great to get out of the sun and take a load off your feet.

On our last vacation it was actually Lily's first time on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and she handled it well.

One key point here is that most kids will do OK on the ride itself, but it can be a bit loud (cannons firing, music and characters) for the smallest kids. Be ready to cover their ears the whole ride or bring ear plugs for them.

Did You Know? A long line doesn't necessarily mean a long wait time. For every 100 people ahead of you in line you can figure roughly a 3 minute wait time.

The Ride...

The Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean ride starts off with a casual slow floatin' cruise through the Bayou. It's actually quite relaxing in the dark starlit surroundings filled with Bayouesque sounds and the casual slap of water against the sides of your log boat.

And then you see it...

It's at this point that you know the Pirates of the Caribbean ride is about to get serious...Seriously fun that is!

A deep, "piraty" voice begins to warn you of the peril that lies ahead, but there is no emergency exit!

You are at the mercy of your log boat as it's slowly cranked up an incline roughly 40 feet, where at the top you meet a misty impression of Davy Jones himself.

From there it's Bon Voyage where both you and your boat are on their way down the largest drop of the ride. Don't worry, the drop is not too big and there is little chance of rain on this ride. In other words, you shouldn't get wet:)

After this be sure to stay the course and follow the map closely as your boat navigates its way through pirate battles, ghostly encounters and rooms full of gold.

And, of course, along the way you'll run into Captain Jack Sparrow (catch him if you can) and Captain Barbossa. Be wary however, because if you cross these pirates you could find yourself behind bars begging like a dog!

By the time you are done with this Disneyland family favorite you're sure to have the catchy tune: "Yo Ho! Yo Ho! A pirates life for me!" echoing in your head for the rest of the day.

Particulars

Load Time: Very Fast. One of the fastest load times of all the Disneyland rides.

Fastpass Available: No.

Height Requirements: None. Infants can ride on adults lap.

Duration: Approximately 15 minutes.

Scareability Factor: Varies...It's a dark, loud ride and each kid will process that differently. We've found that the noise scares the littlest ones the most and at about 2-4 kids may get scared of the characters. But, at 4'ish+ it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean Ride Tips: Set sail in the morning or evening for an even faster boarding time. Many people try to avoid the heat by riding during the hottest times of the day.

Also, you may want to consider earplugs for the little ones. By the way, this ride is not very "PC" and you have to expect pirate like behavior (i.e. chasing women, consumption of alcohol, etc.). Most small kids won't figure it out, but thought we'd give you a heads up.

Physical Considerations: Must be able to enter and exit the boat without the use of a wheelchair. Audio description and handheld captioning devices are available at guest services.

What Say We!

Jenette - I've been riding this since I was a kid and it's fun to share it with my kids now. It's great how they brought in characters from the movie.

Justin - Love it! 15 minutes off my feet and out of the sun. Sweet!

Jonas - Yo Ho! Yo Ho! Pirates life me...Doesn't have the song down verbatim, but we got the point. He likes it!

Caitlyn - Pirates! Pirates! Pirates!

Lilya - Yet to be determined...Check back in a year or two!

History

The Pirates of the Caribbean ride was one of the last Disneyland rides that Walt Disney was involved in creating. Sadly, he didn't live to see it open in 1967.

It was originally supposed to be a walk through attraction with wax figures, but leave it to Walt to spice things up and make it a boat ride with advanced animatronics.

The characters from the movie (Capt. Jack Sparrow, Capt. Barbossa, Davy Jones, etc.) were added in 2006 and it took the creators close to three years to get it just the way they wanted.

Summary

The Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean ride is a great ride for the whole family. It really captures the imagination of the 4-12 year old crowd and is a great way for parents to take a much needed break.

When you need a break from the heat, or just a break in general, hop on in, cool off, relax and enjoy the ride!
